Wide loads need planning. We do it before the wheels turn, so you do not find out about a permit at the dock.
A load is considered oversize or overweight when it exceeds the legal limits for width, height, length or weight. Federal law sets a baseline for the Interstate system, and each state sets its own rules and permit process.
Common legal baselines: 8 ft 6 in wide, about 13 ft 6 in tall (varies by state), and 80,000 lbs gross vehicle weight on the Interstate. Length limits depend on the trailer and state.
| Dimension | Usually fine | Planning needed |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Up to 8 ft 6 in | Over 8 ft 6 in: permit; larger widths often add escorts or restrictions |
| Height | Up to ~13 ft 6 in | Above that: route clearance check and permit |
| Length | Within trailer and state limits | Overhang and over-length: permit, flags, sometimes escort |
| Weight | Within axle and gross limits | Overweight: permit, route and axle review |
