The terms you will hear on a quote, a rate confirmation and a bill of lading.
Accessorial. An extra charge beyond the base rate: tarping, detention, extra stops, permits
Bill of lading (BOL). The shipping document that serves as contract, receipt and title record for the freight
Bumper-pull. A trailer that hitches to the truck's rear bumper receiver; gooseneck trailers hitch in the bed
Consignee. The person or company receiving the freight
Dunnage. Wood or other material placed under or between cargo to protect and secure it
Deadhead. Driving empty with no paying load
Detention. Fee for time spent waiting at pickup or delivery beyond the free time
FMCSA. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the regulator of interstate trucking
Gooseneck. A trailer hitching over the truck axle in the bed, allowing heavier loads and better stability
GVWR. Gross vehicle weight rating: the maximum loaded weight the vehicle is rated for
Hotshot. Time-sensitive or right-sized flatbed freight hauled on a medium-duty truck
Hours of service (HOS). Federal limits on how long a driver may drive and work
LTL. Less-than-truckload: small shipments sharing trailer space
Overwide. A load wider than the legal limit, usually 8 ft 6 in
Pilot / escort car. Vehicle that travels ahead of or behind an oversize load for safety
POD. Proof of delivery: signed confirmation the freight arrived
Rate confirmation. The agreed rate and terms for a specific load, signed by broker and carrier
Shipper. The party sending the freight
USDOT number. The federal identifier for a commercial carrier
WLL. Working load limit: the maximum load a tie-down is rated to secure in use
